Featuring the North American Premiere Performance of Rachel Portman: Earth Songs
This program celebrates the beauty of our planet and the diversity and power of nature. Art has always celebrated nature. To revel in the beauty and power of nature is even more important than ever as we consider the impact we have on our planet. Reconnect with the expansive qualities of nature by hearing how composers have considered nature's awesomeness across time.
Program to including works by Antonín Dvorák, Eriks Ešenvalds, Dan Forrest, Frank Ticheli, and the North American Premiere Performance of Earth Song (2019) by Academy Award winning composer Rachel Portman; a setting of poetry by Nick Drake and the words of climate activist Greta Thunberg.
In the words of Rachel Portman, composer: "Earth Song takes the form of a conversation within the human mind and body as it breathes. The choir represents different thoughts and elemental landscapes on earth that manifest as thoughts might present themselves within the chatter of the thinking mind as it endeavors to still itself. The landscapes are both real and internal within the body. Ultimately, we are seeking to express that humans are as one with the earth and inseparable."

The American University Chamber Singers is a select student ensemble open to music majors as well as other students studying music within American University's tradition of outstanding liberal arts education.
