Student Attends Women as Global Leaders Conference
As part of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) delegation, Aliyah Phillips, WCL ’12, attended the Women as Global Leaders Conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The AJC was the only Jewish organization to attend. Phillips and her fellow delegates discussed women's issues and leadership. The American University Jewish Studies Program scholarship enabled Phillips to participate in this conference. Phillips recounts her enriching experience at the conference.
I would like to thank the American University Jewish Studies Program for awarding me a generous scholarship to join the AJC’s delegation at the Women as Global Leaders Conference at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Under the sponsorship of Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, the country’s minister of higher education and scientific research, the Zayed University conference included 2,000 delegates from more than 60 countries. The conference offered sessions and workshops on women’s issues and leadership, and prominent speakers included Baroness Helena Kennedy and actress Sigourney Weaver. The delegation, comprised of members of AJC’s ACCESS young leadership initiative, was the only Jewish organization at the conference.
After the conference, the AJC delegation met privately with senior Emirati officials, academics, civil society members, and business executives. This visit was AJC’s third to the region within a year. AJC engages in regular dialogue with the U.A.E. government and citizens to promote enhanced U.S.-U.A.E. relations, regional peace, and cooperation.
