Washington Art Matters: The 1980s
Saturday, July 20, 3 p.m.
American University Museum
Admission is free

Art Attack project artist Alberto Gaitán; curator-advocate Jim Mahoney; and on-the-scene writer Lee Fleming discuss the aesthetic and political issues of the 1980s. The panel is moderated by Sidney Lawrence, an emerging artist at the time and the Hirshhorn's PR person until 2003, who is one of the Washington Art Matters, Art Life in the Capital: 1940-1990's authors.

In support of the exhibition Washington Art Matters 1940s–1980s, the American University Museum presents a series of panels that provide first-hand accounts of those five creative decades. Each panel will cover art trends, historical events and anecdotes of the times. Artist guests and others in the audience will be encouraged to offer memories. The panel moderators are co-authors of the newly-released Washington Art Matters, Art Life in the Capital, 1940–1990, a book produced by the Washington Arts Museum and celebrated by this exhibition.

Session One: The 1940s–1960s, June 22, 3 p.m.
Session Two: The 1970s, July 13, 4 p.m.
Session Three: The 1980s, July 20, 3 p.m.
