, Mary Graydon Conference Room 4

Updated 11/7/14

Poetry reading by VWS guest Patricia Smith, 8:00pm - 9:30pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Patricia Smith has published six collections of poetry, as well as books of fiction and nonfiction. She is also a playwright and four-time individual National Poetry Slam Champion. Her first collection of poems, Life According to Motown, grew out of the Chicago poetry slam scene and is considered a classic of the genre. Her most recent collection of poems, Shoulda Been Jimi Savannah, a memoir in verse, won a 2013 Phillis Wheatley Book Award in Poetry and the 2013 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. About this collection, Mark Doty wrote: “Here is one of our essential poets at the top of her form, bristling with energy and fire, praise and outrage . . . her bold, necessary poems light up the American 20th Century in all its song and sorrow.” Smith is a 2008 National Book Award finalist and a winner of the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, the Carl Sandburg Award, and the National Poetry Series award, among others. She is a professor at CUNY/College of Staten Island, a faculty member at Cave Canem, and a visiting professor and writer in residence at Sierra Nevada College in the creative writing MFA program.
