AU Launches New Online MS Data Science Degree

Degree designed for working professionals; prepares graduates for successful careers in data science

By  |

Why Data Science?

In today’s data-driven world, organizations of all types are using data to develop strategies, make critical decisions, and solve problems. Data scientists are in great demand—and AU’s online MS in Data Science is designed with great flexibility for working professionals seeking to build successful careers in data science. The degree will give students the expertise that employers want right now: a deep understanding of complex data, innovative technical skills, strong communication and teamwork skills, and the ability to create data science-enabled solutions to real-life problems.

No technical degree or GRE are required for the degree.

“Our online program is an extension of our established on-campus MS in Data Science, developed to offer maximum flexibility in an inclusive environment for working professionals while maintaining high quality in education,” says Maria Barouti, senior professorial lecturer and director of the new program. “It is a blend of asynchronous and synchronous instruction that leverages tools to build community for online education. Our students are given the opportunity to work on real-world research projects with partners around the DMV area and beyond, as well as secure leadership positions in government organizations and industries.”

Even though students will be online, they can still take advantage of AU’s location in the nation’s capital. The DC region has the nation's highest concentration of data science positions and unparalleled access to private and public sector opportunities. AU's campus is minutes from industry giants and prestigious government institutions. Graduates of the in-person program have gone on to reward careers at Deloitte Consulting, Amazon, Booz Allen Hamilton, the National Institutes of Health, Lockheed Martin, and many other organizations. “Our graduates start with a foot in the door, thanks to AU’s relationships with DC-area institutions and our ever-expanding alumni data science network,” says Barouti.

The Details

The degree consists of 10 courses/30 credit hours, including a capstone that gives students hands-on experience working directly with faculty and other researchers on projects.

Students can choose between two tracks: Business Analytics and Specialized Methods. The Business Analytics track focuses on applied business decision making, geared towards industry and organizations. The Specialized Methods track focuses on recent machine learning and deep learning advances that have received considerable attention and led to a great deal of industrial and academic interest. Cutting edge technology courses such as Applied Natural Language Processing, Neural Networks and Deep Learning cover a range of applications such as image classification, timeseries forecasting, text classification, sentiment analysis, and more.

Students will also take a series of core courses that will train them to clean, process, visualize, and archive modern datasets, including text, imagery, and biometric data. They will also learn how to apply machine learning algorithms to real data, and they master the mathematical and statistical language used by data scientists.
