Welcome Message from the
Director of Teacher Education

Greetings and Welcome to Teacher Education at American University!

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."
—William Butler Yeats

For those of you considering the profession of teaching, we welcome you to the Teacher Education programs in the School of Education, Teaching, and Health. The members of the faculty in the teacher education program are dedicated to K12 education, and you will find yourself in a supportive, yet demanding, environment.

It is our goal to help you develop into a reflective practitioner, dedicated to the principles of community, diversity, equity, excellence. We have initial teacher licensure programs in Elementary and Secondary Education, as well as TESOL and Special Education: Learning Disabilities. We are also pleased to have programs for master teachers in our MEd programs in Curriculum & Instruction.

Teaching is not an endeavor to be taken lightly. To teach is to desire to face challenges and overcome obstacles almost every day. Yet teaching is, by far, one of the most rewarding occupations that exist in our society. The opportunity to witness learning and the development of young minds is unlike any other experience. We believe that teachers are the key conservators of a democratic society, and through our dedication and passion for what we do, we help shape the future.

The Teacher Education programs in the School of Education, Teaching, and Health at American University are designed to help you shape the practices and knowledge to engage all learners in K12 classrooms. We are dedicated to the children of Washington, DC, and you will find that the program here affords one the opportunity to work in both urban and suburban classrooms, giving you experiences with a wide range of learner needs. We have designed all the programs to build toward a supportive capstone experience in which you continue to expand your skills as a professional. Our programs for master teachers carry on this tradition by providing in-depth study and a commitment to excellence in teaching.

As stated subtly in the quote above, we believe that teaching is more than a process of providing children with basic skills and strategies, but rather, to empower and enlighten the next generation. The members of the faculty will work to model for you this passion for teaching and will attempt to instill in you the belief that all learners are worthy of our efforts and access to the tools of a just society.

Sincerely,

Julie Sara Boyd
