Towards Pedagogies of Translingual Practice

As scholars conceptualize multilingual competence in new ways, a term coming into prominence is translingual practice. The term helps us consider languages as always coming into contact, generating new forms and meanings through their synergy. This orientation help us understand the ways in which people shuttle between languages and communities in their everyday interactions in the context of globalization, migration, and transnational relations. However, language teachers have raised important concerns about the relevance of this orientation to classroom activities and teaching. In this workshop, we will analyze transcripts of classroom interactions and literacy practices to consider the ways in which a translingual competence can be developed among students. We will also discuss questions relating to the social and educational appropriateness of these pedagogical approaches
