Is tuition discounted?

We are providing all undergraduate and graduate students an AU Community Care Spring Discount equivalent to 10 percent of fall tuition. We also already committed additional $13 million in financial aid for this academic year.

What fees will be charged or waived?

We are waiving the Sports Center Fee for the spring. This is in addition to the already announced reductions in Activity Fees.

Due to the impact of COVID-19 on the D.C. community and area universities, WMATA is temporarily suspending the U∙PASS Program for the spring 2021 semester. The U∙PASS Program has become part of the AU student experience and we understand this decision affects the transportation options for students residing in the Washington, DC area. We consulted extensively with WMATA in pursuit of a modified program for the fall and spring, but ultimately WMATA decided it was not a viable option.

The university will continue to work with WMATA regarding the U∙PASS Program. Decisions will be based on the evolving conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic and the operating status of WMATA and the university.

I am currently using VA education benefits. How will AU’s plan for the spring semester impact my VA education benefits eligibility?

We have posted updated guidance from Veteran Affairs on our Veteran Services Office page, and we’ll continue to update any additional guidance on our site. You can also contact us directly at veterans@american.edu.

Will financial aid be affected?

Financial aid packages will be updated as applicable to reflect the 10 percent tuition discount.

Will my undergraduate financial aid change because I am not in AU residential housing?

Your aid will not change because you are not residing in AU housing. As in the fall, we anticipate that students will continue to incur costs for food and housing this spring. However, students who notify the Financial Aid Office that they will be a commuter student—a student living at home with a parent, parents, or family members—will have their costs of attendance adjusted to the lower commuter budget and their financial aid awards reduced accordingly.

Will my undergraduate financial aid change if I decide to participate in the Spring 2021 Mid-Semester Residential Experience?

Your aid will not change if you opt to participate in the AU Mid-Semester Residential Experience. Please note, the financial aid you received for spring 2021 anticipates cost for food and housing for entire semester, therefore no additional aid can be awarded to cover the cost of Spring 2021 Mid-Semester Residential Experience.

Will the 10 percent tuition discount or changes in fees impact my financial aid package?

For many students, the 10 percent tuition discount and fee changes will not impact financial aid eligibility. AU grants and scholarships can only be used to cover the cost of tuition. Also, most outside scholarships have the same restriction. So, no combination of these types of awards can exceed the total amount charged for tuition. In cases where that total amount of these awards exceed the cost of tuition, AU is required to reduce the amount of the award to the amount that is being charged for tuition.

Will my financial aid be impacted if I do not return this spring for family or personal reasons but plan to return in fall 2021?

Students should work with their academic advisor and the Registrar’s Office to request a leave of absence for spring 2021. To maintain your aid eligibility for fall 2021, you must have:

Please note, need-based aid recipients are required to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid-FAFSA each academic year and continue to demonstrate financial need to retain their federal and institutional need-based aid. Be sure to contact your financial aid counselor for detailed information regarding the potential impact that a leave of absence may have on repayment of federal loans.

What is the best way to find out about the status of my financial aid?

Please refer to the myAU student portal at myau.american.edu for information regarding your financial aid status.

How can I find information about graduate financial aid?

For questions regarding your graduate merit award or fellowship, please contact your school administrator. For graduate federal financial aid inquiries, please contact the Financial Aid Office at financialaid@american.edu.

Will CARES Act funding be available in spring 2021?

Congress recently allocated additional funding to assist students with emergency costs that arise due to COVID-19, including tuition, food, housing, health care and child-care. To date, the Department of Education has not provided information regarding the amount of funds that will be made available to AU. Please visit the AU Financial Aid website for the most up to date and comprehensive information on CARES Act funding and other financial aid resources.
