Campus Parking Update

As part of the return to in-person classes and activities, American University will resume parking enforcement on campus and at university buildings on August 1, 2021. An active parking permit or daily payment will be required in all AU parking facilities between 8:00AM and 5:00PM (8:00AM-8:00PM at WCL), Monday through Friday. With the advent of the hybrid work environment, AU community members can use the parking payment format that works best for their schedule.

Full-time faculty and staff can enroll in or restart monthly payroll deductions for parking through the AU Parking Portal (sign in using your AU credentials). If you would like to check your deduction status or cancel parking deductions, please submit a request to parking@american.edu. The pre-tax parking deduction is $126 a month.

AU community members may also choose to take advantage of the “Virtual Self-Park Code.” The location code offers a discounted $0.75/hour rate (plus $0.35 service fee) through the PayByPhone mobile application to park in all general parking areas on campus, as well as the garages at the Spring Valley Building and 4401 Connecticut Ave (a separate authorization is required for this location). To get the discount code go to the Parking Portal and select Affiliated Login and log in using your AU credentials. Click the Get Permits button and select the "Virtual Self Park Code" option to register your vehicle., obtain the discount code and get instructions for use. Logins using a guest account do not have access to this parking option.

The PayByPhone app and discount code is currently not available for use at the 3201 New Mexico or 4200 Wisconsin locations, which are operated by outside management companies. We are working to update this arrangement and will provide additional information when it is available. Authorized faculty and staff enrolled in payroll deductions remain eligible to park in these locations, all other visitors are subject to posted policies. If you have additional questions about parking at these facilities, please email parking@american.edu.

Students can use the Virtual Self-Park Code or get permits for the semester or full academic year, which are available for purchase on the following schedule:

Parking permit sale dates
Location/Semester   Available for Sale Permit Start Date
WCL/Fall & Full Academic Year 7/16/2021 8/20/2021
Main Campus/Fall & Full Academic Year 7/26/2021 8/23/2021
WCL & Main Campus/ Spring 12/24/2021 1/10/2022

First-year students are not eligible to have cars on campus. Requests for an exemption to this policy may be submitted to the Office of the Dean of Students for consideration.

As a reminder, in accordance with Washington, DC regulations and the University’s “Good Neighbor Policy,” all guests, students, faculty, and staff driving to campus are required to park in a designated parking garage with the appropriate parking pass. Parking is prohibited on all neighborhood streets while visiting any university property. Abiding by this policy is a condition of enrollment and employment with American University.

For additional information on parking at AU, please visit the website or contact the Office of Parking & Commuter Services at parking@american.edu. As always, please adhere to posted signs indicating reserved spaces or other potential parking restrictions.
