Americorps Overview

Americorps is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent resident aliens age 17 and older. Members serve full or part time over a 10- to 12- month period. Upon successful completion of their service, members receive an education award to pay for college, graduate school, or to pay back qualified student loans. During their service, members receive training, and student loan deferment. Members who serve part time receive a partial education award. For more information, visit the Americorps.

AmeriCorps Education Award Payments

You may create and submit a request online for your AmeriCorps Education Award benefits to be sent to American University. The request is sent electronically to AU for review and certification. The amount of the education award request cannot exceed the total charges in your student account for the semester specified.

Payments from Americorps are disbursed in two installments. The first half of the award will arrive at the beginning of the semester, and the second will arrive around the midpoint of the semester. Any balance incurred by a student, that is not covered by the education award, is due on the published AU semester due dates, which can be found at AU Payment Deadlines.

In the event of an over award, excess funds will be returned directly to Americorps. For more information please visit Americorps.
