Maternity leave

100% of pay for 6 - 8 weeks from the birth of the baby through short term disability

Full-time staff with at least 6 months of service and full-time faculty receive 100% of pay under the university’s short term disability plan for the first six to eight weeks from the birth of the baby. The benefit’s duration depends on the type of delivery, with 8 weeks for a C-section.

  • Short term disability coverage runs concurrent with Family and Medical Leave (FML).
  • Both short term disability and FML are administered by Prudential Insurance. For information to start a claim or to contact Prudential, see the Prudential Reporting an FMLA Absence or Disability brochure.
  • For staff, there is a 14 calendar day waiting period before short term disability benefits are paid. Sick and annual leave can be used to cover this time and all accrued sick leave must be exhausted before short term disability benefits are paid.

Paternity leave and leave for adoptive parents

Faculty and staff dads and parents of adopted children, who meet the FML eligibility requirements, can take up to 16 weeks of either continuous or intermittent FML leave following the birth or adoption of a child.

Faculty and staff parents who meet the FML eligibility requirements can take up to 16 weeks of either continuous or intermittent FML family leave following the birth or adoption of a child.

Leave requested on an intermittent basis is subject to departmental approval. This leave can be taken any time in the first 12 months of the baby’s life.

Staff can use accrued annual leave and up to 35 days of sick leave to receive pay during the approved FML leave.
