Assistant Dean - Budget and Technology
School of Communication
Laura Murray’s day job is to oversee the School of Communication’s (SOC) Budget and Technology concerns, but she contributes to AU in other significant ways that go far beyond any job requirement. Laura has energized and mobilized the SOC community to donate more than 500 items to The Market – AU’s food pantry, in addition to the 200+ items that were donated during SOC’s annual food drive.
Laura is committed to serving the needs of AU community members, in this case, specifically “food insecure” students. She oversees the gathering and dissemination of food donations, coordinates with other entities such as the Capital Food Bank, assesses specific food needs that are not being met, and offers her office as the collection point for donations. She evens delivers the donation to The Market in her rolling cart.
Laura does not look for recognition nor does she expect others to assist with this endeavor. She sees a need and acts to address it. Laura accepted the position as the founding chair of The Market’s steering committee.
Laura’s actions have a real, tangible impact for our students in need. In addition to helping students who are food insecure, Laura has helped to build awareness and appreciation for The Market as an AU campus resource and service opportunity. Laura Murray was recognized by two separate nominators for her efforts and we are pleased to award her with the 2018 Service to the AU Community Award.
