School of Public Affairs
Janet Nagler has worked as an Academic Counselor at American University since 1981. She is currently an Academic Counselor in the Department of Public Administration and Policy in the School of Public Affairs advising graduate students.
Janet truly cares about her students and constantly advocates for them to school and department leadership. She advises students who are pursuing complicated degrees, have unique or difficult circumstances, and who have had extenuating circumstances that have impacted their performance in the classroom. While advising students on course registration or concentration selection, Janet takes time to learn about their strengths, aspirations, or areas of concern and always recommends an optimal plan for the upcoming semesters.
Janet also manages the exchange program with the Hertie School in Germany. She navigates countless details related to contract provisions, exchange ratios, and course credits and substitutions. She holds regular sessions for students to share information about the program, and for Hertie students visiting our program, involving “veterans” who can provide context and advice about their experiences. Without Janet’s support and dedication, this program would be far less robust.
A tremendous resource and a “go to” person for department, school, and university information, Janet generously shares her insights and experience. Without reservation, she takes the initiative to help where needed. Recently, Janet stepped in to advise students in the Justice, Law, and Criminology graduate programs because the advisor left the university suddenly. She also stepped in to cover for a Master of Public Policy advisor who retired until a new one was identified.
Janet’s devotion to AU is inspiring. She welcomes new members to our community and fosters relationships that enrich and benefit our students, faculty and staff.
Congratulations to Janet Nagler for being selected as the recipient of the 2020 Maria Bueno Lifetime Achievement Staff Award and thank you for all that you do for American University.
Congratulations to the 2020 Maria Bueno Lifetime Achievement Award nominees!
Although the nominees were not selected for this year's award, their outstanding service did not go unnoticed. Thank you for all you do!
