Bio
John R. Whitman teaches at the Kogod School of Business at American University.
Dr. Whitman has worked in international environmental education and management, started (and sold) an international software tools company, and is conducting research in alternative forms of organization, including cooperatives, nonprofit organizations, and philanthropic foundations, that create both social and economic value.
His Ph.D. degree is from the University of Toronto, his Ed.M. degree in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy from Harvard University, his A.B. in Philosophy from Boston University.
Dr. Whitman has written chapters on Social Entrepreneurship and on Education for the Social Economy (peer reviewed), published in Nonprofit Management & Leadership (peer reviewed) and other journals. He authored chapters on social entrepreneurship for the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. He is co-author of Delivering Satisfaction and Service Quality: A customer-based approach for libraries, published by the American Library Association (2001) and is co-author of a book on the Social Economy of the United States, to be published by the University of Toronto Press (peer reviewed).
