Handshake User Guide What is Handshake?

Handshake is a career services platform that provides Kogod business students with one-stop access to opportunities to attend on-campus interviews, events, workshops, apply to jobs and internship postings, and utilize online career resources as well as skill building tools.

Log In To Handshake

  • Navigate to Handshake using the following URL: https://american.joinhandshake.com
  • Click "log in with your AU username & password" for current students or enter your email for in the box below for alumni access. (Note: if you have never accessed Handshake as an alum you will need to contact the office to set up your account)

Complete Your Profile

  • After logging in the first time, Handshake will ask you a series of questions related to your job search. Answer these to help its algorithm determine which jobs to "push" in your front page "for you" section
  • Each student now has a profile on Handshake where you can complete your work experience and extra-curricular activities. You have the option of making your profile visible to employers and other students if you wish. This is a feature very similar to LinkedIn

Upload Your Resume

  • Select your name in the toolbar in the right hand corner, and then select "Documents" from the drop down that follows
  • Click "Add New Document" to upload a resume, cover letter, transcript, etc.
  • Select the document from your computer drive, name it appropriately in the "Document Name" field, categorize it in the "Document Type" field, and select "Add Document."
  • Your files will automatically convert to a .pdf format which is the version sent to employers. Review the .pdf to make sure it converted correctly. If needed, change your source (original) document so the .pdf version is correct.

Find a Job or Internship

  • Select "Jobs" in the upper toolbar
  • To narrow your search, enter detailed search criteria and filters. The search will automatically update

Create Search ALerts (Save Time and Effort!)

  • To create a search alert, search using criteria you would like to save, and then click "create search alert" on the right hand side
  • Use the pencil icon next to your search to edit the name of the search, how you would like to receive notifications from it, and how often
  • This way, the system can work for you and comb through postings to push those that may be of most interest to you

Apply for a Job or Internship

  • After selecting a job or internship of interest, you will see a blue "Apply" box near the job title.
  • Select a resume and cover letter (if applicable) that you want to submit from the list of documents you have already uploaded in the system or upload one ad hoc.
  • Tip: If you do not qualify for the job or internship, text will appear explaining why you don't qualify; you may still apply to the posting. Employers will simply see applications in order of matching the qualifications. This is not true of on-campus recruitment postings, which limit applications to specific candidates based on criteria.

Apply for an Interview

  • Select "On-Campus Interviews" in the top toolbar
  • A list of job postings will appear that you qualify for based on your academic profile. There may be grayed out job postings that you do not qualify for and an explanation of the criteria you do not meet.
  • Apply to the job posting of interest that you qualify for, providing all requested documents (resume, cover letter, transcript, etc.).
  • Once submitted, your application/interview will be set as pending until the employer determines your status (selected, alternate, or declined for an interview).

Employer Information

  • The "Employers" tab is useful in learning more about a specific firm's company culture, industry, available jobs/internships, and career fairs.
  • To view employer profiles, click on the "Employers" tab from the home page.
  • A list of employers with profiles will appear. Click on the employer name of interest and view their Handshake page to see contact information, public staff lists, and jobs posted for that employer.

RSVP and Register for Events

  • Click on the "Events" tab to access the "Fair Search", "Event Search" and "Calendar" sub-tabs.
  • To RSVP for an event, click on the name of the event, and then the "Join Event" button. Per the office's Professionalism Policies, only RSVP for events that you can attend, and attend all events to which you RSVP. If there is an emergency and you are unable to attend an event the Office of Career Engagement puts on, please notify the office as soon as possible.
