The Office of Career Engagement provides several online career exploration and job search tools. Below you'll find more information on each tool.


Handshake is a portal for AU students. This portal provides access to:

  • Career exploration and assessment tools

  • Workshops and skill building opportunities

  • Internship and job postings

  • Regular networking events-on and off campus.

  • On campus interviewing opportunities

  • Access to online technology suite to leverage organization, industry and other databases and manage the internship and job search

CareerInsider is powered by Vault and provides students with the intelligence you need for the career you want. The online career library includes resources for job searches, industry and career research, educational opportunities and more. Particularly good for those seeking careers in finance, consulting, accounting and related functions.

Accessing CareerInsider:
The American University, Kogod School of Business in conjunction with has arranged for you to have free, unrestricted privileges to the largest most comprehensive online career resource available. To access this content, you must login to Handshake and click the Vault link under Career Center > Resources.

Vault provides users with insider information on various industries and employers. The site's "Industry Guides" provide in-depth information on numerous fields including accounting, consulting, marketing, investment banking, international development, and more. In these guides, you will learn about life in a given industry and obtain tips for how to break into the field. To identify Industry guides, click "Download Guides" in the upper left corner. Then under "Browse Categories" you will find all the guides in the Vault database. When you click "Industry Guides" you are taken to a list of over 40 guides for you to download (below).

In addition, Vault's "Employer Guides" (found under "Download Guides" on the main page) provide users with insight into top employers with information on top employers in fields of interest. The guides are broken out into different industrial areas and give company information like locations, statistics and insiders thoughts and views about the organization.


Registering for Vault is a simple and free process accessible through Handshake. To register, please follow the following steps:

  1. Login in to Handshake and click on Vault under Career Center > Resources on the top toolbar.
  2. At Vault, under the "New to Career Insider?" section, click on "Create an Account."
  3. Enter required information including your status, first/last name, username, password, and geographical information. Feel free to share any additional optional information as you desire.


CareerShift is an excellent resource to find companies within a specific industry/region and contact information for current employees for informational interviews. Register to use CareerShift as an additional tool in your employment/internship search.

Functioning on Key Word searches, Career Shift allows you to identify specific industry niches and geographical parameters for your job search. Upon your first visit to the Login page you will enter your first name, last name, and American university email address ( You will then create a personalized account that will allow you to login and have specific search features.

To search for internship and job postings, click on the "My Jobs" tab. By identifying various search terms, you can guide your position search. For example, searching for "entry-level finance" positions within 5 miles of the 20008 Washington DC zip code returns over 50 possible positions!

Other key features include the ability to do specific company searches. Entering in the "My Contacts" area will allow you to search for a specific individual, company, position type, or business type within a set industry. When we enter "International" in the Keyword/Description area and "Banking" in the Industry section, Career Shift returns over 500 companies for this search.

To identify specific individuals at a company, click on "My Contacts." You can enter a company name or simply search by position type and industry. For example, entering "Manager" and choosing the industry of "Accounting," returns 81 companies.  

You can then enter the company profile to learn more about the organization and key employees. Information on company employees is extensive and includes position title, biographical information like educational background, and publications, email address, and phone number. Taking it one step further, by clicking on "Find contacts at this company" will provide you with a list of current employees at the company. This is a great networking tool to help you learn more about the people working at a company of interest to you.

Utilize CareerShift to identify specific professionals, positions, companies, and gain company information for your job search and professional research.

First time users: 
To access CareerShift for the first time, login to Handshake and create an account using the CareerShift link or you will only have access to a free trial. 

Returning users: 
If you already have created a Kogod account, at the home screen in CareerShift click the CareerShift logo above to login to your account.


GoinGlobal Country Career Guides are the ultimate job seeker's tool for finding employment at home and abroad with over 10,000 resources available to Kogod students.

Packed with country-specific career information, each guide has been developed by a local career specialist, updated annually, and features recommended web sites and detailed resource descriptions for such vital employment topics as:

  • Job search resources: general and specialized job sites, job fairs, newspapers that publish job ads, government employment offices, executive search firms, and temporary staffing agencies
  • Country employment outlook and key industry trends
  • Top company listings: corporate profiles of the largest employers includes NAICS descriptions, revenue, and full contact information
  • Business resources: Trade Councils, Chambers of Commerce, and other professional and social networking groups
  • Work permit and visa regulations
  • Finance and compensation information: taxes, housing, transportation, cost of living, medical insurance, vacation/leave, pensions, social security, etc.
  • Resume/CV writing guidelines and examples
