American University School of Communication students are always on the move, trying to learn as much as they can and strengthening their skills through internships and other experiences.
Shira Stein, a senior majoring in journalism, took to Twitter to share her 2017 reporting accomplishments which included publishing work with the Durango Herald, Bloomberg BNA, The Hill and The Washington Post. In 2018, she spoke on a panel at the Newseum, Power to the Interns.
I began the year with a visit to Durango, Colorado, meeting my new colleagues and learning more about the town for which I would be reporting. pic.twitter.com/X1kp963G08

The next day, I was out again early, covering the likely largest single-day march in history. Instead of standing in one place, I walked with the women and men of Colorado, seeing it from their perspective. https://t.co/RSWfXBgAKB

A little over a month later, I scrambled through the back stairwells of the U.S. Capitol to make it to my tiny little stool in time for the familiar "Mr. Speaker, the President of the United States." https://t.co/R3GwfFeKjh

I worked on a unique profile of then-Judge Neil Gorsuch, finding an angle no other news outlet had considered when looking into his background. The day the profile was published, I sat in on his confirmation hearings. https://t.co/bjExsOvamf

I got the opportunity to Snapchat from the White House Easter Egg Roll for @thehill. Although I hadn't had a lot of experience with posting on social media for news outlets, it was a really great learning experience for me. https://t.co/5porO7n4XT

One of my last stories for @DurangoHerald was a look at the unique bipartisan relationship between @SenBennetCO and @SenCoryGardner, especially in such a partisan year in Congress. https://t.co/tQp1DisSov

I wrote four stories that made it to the TOP section of the Bloomberg Terminal, a first for any @BloombergBNA intern. Three of them were based on data work I did, the first time I had written any stories using data. https://t.co/VRu2urdYnL

As someone who loves science, getting to spend an afternoon talking about the eclipse and listening to people get excited about it at the National Air and Space Museum for @thehill was a dream. https://t.co/QmUFCO4gi4 https://t.co/AuyypISeop

After years of dreaming about writing for @washingtonpost, I started my internship with the Metro desk on September 18. pic.twitter.com/MFEnGZyiqx

My first byline for @washingtonpost was a topic on which I was uniquely suited to write: a controversy on my own university's campus. I listened to the voices of students who were tired of the problems at our school and wanted to be heard. https://t.co/exFIgNeu3N

On my first day of high school journalism, I learned about a Supreme Court case called Tinker v Des Moines. For my last story of the year, I wrote about a reenactment of the case for middle and high school students and got to interview Mary Beth Tinker. https://t.co/7UM3trIF8a

Starting in June, I'll be returning to @BloombergBNA as a START reporter. I'll be rotating through four different news desks, getting to meet even more of the reporters I met this summer. I'm thrilled to have a job after graduation, especially at such a great news organization.
