Update on Commencement and Pass/Fail Option for Students

American University continues to take proactive measures to safeguard the health and wellbeing of students, faculty and staff in response to the complex and rapidly changing COVID-19 global health pandemic. Accordingly, we are sharing some recent AU decisions:

Today, President Sylvia M. Burwell announced that the May 2020 Spring Commencement ceremonies, including the Washington College of Law (WCL), will be conducted online. Members of the Class of 2020 will also be invited to a special dedicated ceremony on campus in December 2020.

Also, our provost announced that beginning April 1, 2020 and through the last day of classes, April 27, 2020 (June 7, 2020 for students on the four-term calendar), American University will allow most undergraduate and graduate students to select a Pass/Fail option for one, some, or all of their Spring 2020 courses. This change does not apply to the Washington College of Law.
