- Changes to Title IX Office and Case Resolution Process
As we prepare to begin a new academic year, we would like to inform you about changes related to Title IX response protocol and introduce you to the new Title IX staff.
On August 1, 2017 American University instituted a new response protocol for resolving Title IX complaints against students. Title IX covers all reports of sex- and gender-based discrimination, including sexual assault, rape, stalking, sexual exploitation, dating and domestic violence, and sexual harassment. Reports received by the University about a student accused of committing one of these behaviors will be resolved through an investigation process, with a trained investigator assessing all relevant information and making a finding of responsibility based on a preponderance of the evidence. This change from a hearing model to an investigator model is more student centered and allows for more timely resolution of cases. A flow chart of the new investigation process can be found at www.american.edu/titleix under "Title IX Complaint Protocol - Student Complaints Against Students." The full procedures related to violations of University Policy on the basis of sex and gender can be found in the Student Conduct Code (page 16).
Additionally, the Title IX Office has two new staff members. Regina Curran joined the Office of Campus Life in May 2017 as AU's Title IX Program Officer. Ms. Curran is an experienced higher education professional and investigator, who returns to AU after working in Title IX roles at both Towson University and the University of Maryland, College Park.
Fariha Quasem, joined the Title IX team in August 2017 as the Title IX Investigator. Ms. Quasem comes to AU with significant experience in higher education, advocacy, and investigations, most recently at Southern New Hampshire University. The addition of a full time investigator will enable AU to more quickly respond and resolve complaints of sex- and gender-based discrimination.
Students are invited to meet Ms. Curran and Ms. Quasem at "Title IX Tuesdays" every Tuesday during the fall 2017 semester in The Bridge. This will be an opportunity to ask questions about Title IX or share feedback for the office. Details to come.
If you have questions, feel free to contact the Title IX Office at email@example.com or Butler Pavilion 4th Floor (the Office of Campus Life suite).
