ISSS Programs

The following is an overview of ISSS programs:

International Student Orientation

The week immediately before the Fall and Spring semesters each year is set aside for International Student Orientation. International Student Orientation is a week-long cross-culturally focused series of sessions designed to facilitate your transition to American University and the U.S. Newly admitted international students will receive a preliminary Orientation schedule with their immigration documents. The finalized schedule will be given to all students at check-in on the first day of Orientation. For more information about Orientation, visit our International Student Orientation Guide.

Cross-Cultural Training

ISSS facilitates training sessions on communication style, conflict resolution, and cultural adjustment as well as departure and re-entry programs for students studying abroad.

Global Nomad Services

Global Nomads (or "third culture kids") are persons of any age or nationality who have spent their childhood years living in one or more countries outside of their country of origin. ISSS coordinates events to assist global nomads in their transition to AU.

Ethnic and Nationality Club Advising

ISSS provides guidance and support for ethnic and nationality clubs and assists with promotion and planning of special events. The ISSS/Multicultural Affairs Award Ceremony is held each year in April to recognize outstanding multicultural and international students, alumni, staff and faculty.

Awards and Recognition

ISSS recognizes graduating international students who have demonstrated excellence in leadership, academics and community service at AU. At the annual AU Student Achievement Awards Ceremony, the Carleton Savage Award is presented to the international student who has made a significant contribution to increasing intercultural understanding.

AU Academic Success Network

AU is committed to the success of each and every student and it has created an integrated, campus-wide system to strengthen the academic skills of all international students seeking support. The Academic Success Network includes research and writing, academic culture, and much more. ISSS ensures that every new international student gets connected to the network.
