Airport Ground Transportation

There are several different ways to get from the airport to your final destination. You are encouraged to take a taxicab if you have a lot of luggage. Most locations in D.C. are accessible by public transportation. Please note that all prices here are subject to change.

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)

TAXI
Taxi service from Dulles airport is provided exclusively by Washington Flyer Taxi.

SUPER SHUTTLE SHARED VAN
Group van service is provided by Super Shuttle "blue vans." Vans are shared and each person in the van is taken to their destination.

BUS TO METRORAIL TRAIN
Washington Flyer Coach provides bus service from Dulles Airport to the West Falls Church metro station. From the West Falls Church station take the metrorail train to the Tenleytown-American University station, then take American University bus from the metro station to campus (see below for detailed directions).

Cost:
Washington Flyer bus fare: $9 one way ($16 round trip).
Metrorail fare: $2.95 ($2.35 at non-peak hours) from West Falls Church to Tenleytown.
(please verify prices on-line in case of increases)

Directions:

Take the Washington Flyer bus from Dulles airport to the West Falls Church metro station (20 - 30 minutes).

At the West Falls Church station (on the orange line) get on the metro train going in the direction of New Carrolton

Get off at the Metro Center station and transfer to a red line train going in the direction of Shady Grove

Take the red line train to the Tenleytown-AU station (about 40 minutes total from West Falls Church)

Take the free American University Shuttle Bus from the Tenleytown metro stop to campus (10 minutes)

Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI)

TAXI AND PRIVATE CAR
The BWI Airport taxi stand is located just outside the baggage claim area of the Lower Level Terminal.

BUS TO METRORAIL:
The BWI Express Metro Bus (metro bus B30) runs circa every 40 minutes from BWI airport to the Greenbelt Metrorail Station. From Greenbelt, take the metrorail train to the Tenleytown-American University station (one transfer).

Cost:
B-30 express bus costs $3.00Metrorail from Greenbelt to Tenleytown costs $3.55 ($2.35 during off-peak hours).

Directions to American University:
* Take the B-30 bus from the BWI airport terminal to the Greenbelt Metrorail Station.
* Take the metrorail train in the direction of Branch Avenue (green line).
* At the Fort Totten station transfer to the red line train going in the direction of Shady Grove
* Get off at the Tenleytown-American University stop and take the free AU shuttle bus to campus.

TRAIN TO WASHINGTON DC METRORAIL
A free bus runs from the BWI airport to the BWI Rail Station. To get to American University, take the train from the BWI Rail Station to Union Station in Washington DC, then transfer to the metrorail train and take a red line metrorail train to Tenleytown - American University.

Monday through Friday, daytime: MARC commuter train,
Weekends, evenings, and holidays when MARC does not run: Amtrak train

Cost:
* MARC train from BWI Rail Station to Union Station Washington DC costs $6
* See the Amtrak website for fares and schedules from BWI Rail Station to Union Station Washington DC when the MARC train is not running. The Amtrak train costs more than the MARC train, fare depends on time and day.
* Metrorail from Union Station to Tenleytown - American University costs $1.95 ($1.35 at non-peak hours)

Directions:
* Take the free shuttle bus from the airport terminal to the BWI Rail Station
* Take the train (MARC or Amtrak) southbound to Washington DC Union Station
* At Union Station go to the Metrorail station located in the lower level of Union Station.
* Take the Metrorail train in the direction of Shady Grove (red line).
* Get off at the Tenleytown-American University stop and take the free AU shuttle bus to campus.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)

TAXI
A variety of taxicab companies serve Reagan National Airport. There is a taxi dispatcher at each terminal to assist passengers. Service from the National Airport to AU costs approximately $22, plus tip

METRORAIL SERVICE
Metrorail stops adjacent to Terminals B and C. Both the blue and the yellow lines stop at Reagan National Airport.
Directions to American University:
*Take the Blue line train from Reagan National in the direction of Largo Town Center
*Stay on the Blue line until reaching Metro Center
*Get off at Metro Center
*At Metro Center switch to the Red line train in the direction of Shady Grove
* Get off at the Tenleytown-AU stop
*Take the free American University Shuttle Bus located outside the Tenleytown Metro stop. The shuttle will provide service to the Main Campus and Tenley Campus.

Cost to Tenleytown-American University: $2.50 ($1.85 at non-peak hours)
