Optional Practical Training (OPT) Employment Reporting

All F-1 students on OPT must report any change in employment or address during OPT within 10 days. Also inform ISSS if you decide to leave the US and not return on OPT or change your status during your approved OPT time.

Starting October 26, 2018, SEVIS will automatically calculate students’ total days of unemployment. Please remember to report employment on your SEVP Portal account as soon as you know you have employment. Your employment start date cannot be prior to your OPT start date.

Report employment & change of address

The new SEVP Portal allows you to report your employment and change of address directly to the US government. Once your OPT has been approved and your start date has passed, you will receive an email from SEVIS to your AU email. Please allow 3 days from your OPT start date to receive this email. If you do not receive it, contact ISSS immediately. Create and use your SEVP Portal account to report all changes in employment or address while you are on OPT.

Note: If your OPT start date has not passed and you change your address, report this through the MyAU Portal.

Use iEagle to submit a copy of your OPT EAD card. The e-form is listed under Optional Practical Training --> OPT Reporting in the left menu.

STEM OPT Extension

All students on the OPT STEM Extension must submit current employer information every 6 months. Log on to iEagle and submit the STEM OPT Reporting e-form under OPT Reporting in the left menu.

If you change status from F-1 (i.e. to H-1B, A-1, G-4, Permanent Resident, etc.) email a copy of your change of status confirmation to ISSS.


You will receive an email with instructions on creating a portal account. This email will come from do-not-reply.sevp@ice.dhs.gov. If you do not see the email, check your spam or junk mail folder. If you still do not see it, contact ISSS to have the email sent again.

The SEVP Portal allows you to:

  • View details about your post-completion or STEM OPT. 
  • Report changes to your address, telephone and employer information. 
  • View and update data on all your employers in one place.

You may reset your own account by clicking on the "password reset" option on the SEVP Portal log-in page. If this does not work, please contact ISSS to help reset your account.

The SEVP Portal works best in Firefox and Chrome. 

SEVIS only recognizes your American University email address. 

When creating your account or logging in to your account, DO NOT use @student.american.edu. 

You must use @american.edu as the ending of your email account when you log in. 

No, you will not be given access to create a SEVP Portal account until your OPT has been approved and your start date has passed.

Please make sure you are entering the address in the correct format indicated in the SEVP Portal. The city, state, and zip code must be listed in the separate section for each and not on the street address lines.
