The month of Ramadan is nearly upon us. On behalf of the Kay Spiritual Life Center staff, I want to wish you a blessed and meaningful Ramadan. May this month of fasting and prayer be a time of reflection and blessing to you.
It has been a difficult year for us as a University community. In addition to the challenges we've had on campus, we have experienced the effects of a divisive national political climate. It has left many Muslim Americans and Muslim visitors to our country anxious about their place in the broader society.
As we together work for greater diversity and inclusion nationally, rest assured that your place in the community of the Kay Spiritual Life Center and American University is secure. Kay is a house of prayer for all people and our Muslim brothers and sisters are an important part of what makes Kay the place that it is. And so, as a statement of your community's place in our broader AU community and as a declaration of solidarity, I will once again be joining you in your Ramadan fast this year. It is my privilege to serve you as your University Chaplain, and to work with you on ways that we can ensure that the Muslim community and all our faith communities feel welcomed, appreciated, and affirmed at American University.
Wishing you a blessed and noble Ramadan, I remain
Rev. Mark A. Schaefer
