First-Year Orientation Leaders (OLs) and Family Transition Advisors are American University students who assist the Orientation, Transition & Retention professional staff with the implementation of orientation programs for all new undergraduate students and families at American University. There are two Orientation student staff roles.

Applications due Wednesday November 13 at 11:59PM
- Attend and participate in Spring Training sessions on Wednesdays from 11am-1pm (February 5 – April 22)
- Attend and participate in Orientation Staff Retreat (June 14) and Summer Training (June 15-19)
- Attend staff meetings during and following Eagle Summit sessions
- Complete session preparations on the day prior to Eagle Summit sessions (done on a rotating basis)
- Serve as a student representative to families and students
- Work required All-American Welcome events (August Eagle Summit, Transfer Transitions, and Convocation) and be prepared to support other events sponsored by OTR like regional student socials
- Other duties as assigned
- Earn $14.00 per hour during training and orientation programs. Orientation staff will be paid overtime for hours worked over 40 per week.

- Housing provided from June 13 – July 18
- Family Transition Advisors are not required to live on campus over the summer, but housing will be provided upon request.
- Meals provided during Eagle Summit sessions and parts of summer training

- Lead small groups of 30-50 guests per session, facilitating discussions and explaining campus resources
- Participate in a student panel answering family and guest questions about the student experience
- Lead campus tours and answer questions about the university
- Assist the Orientation Lead Team in managing Eagle Summit and Transfer Transitions logistics
- Available from the Orientation Staff Retreat (June 14) through the end of Summer Training (June 19), all summer orientation session, and adhere to the Student Conduct Code
- Family Transition Advisors are not required to live on campus in June and July, but housing will be provided if needed.
- Family Transition Advisors can hold outside employment or internships over the summer as long as they do not conflict with required hours.
- Family Transition Advisors will work approximately 14-18 hours per session, and can expect to work from approximately 7:00am-5:00pm on Day 1 and 8:00am-12:00pm on Day 2. Family Transition Advisors may have the opportunity to sign up to work additional portions of Day 1 and Day 2 as needed.
- Lead small group discussions explaining campus resources with 12-18 students per session
- Facilitate Empower AU, a consent and violence prevention program for incoming AU students
- Live on campus from the Orientation Staff Retreat (June 14) through the end of Eagle Summit (July 17), and adhere to the Student Conduct Code
- Host Early Arrival student socials the night prior to Eagle Summit sessions (on a rotating basis)
- Serve as an on-call resource during overnight Eagle Summit sessions
- Over the summer First Year OLs cannot hold outside employment or internships
- First Year OLs will work approximately 20-25 hours per session, and can expect to work from approximately 7:00am-10pm on Day 1 (to include potential overnight responsibilities) and 8:00am-4:00pm on Day 2.
