Welcome Week 2018 Schedule

Welcome Week is designated as the official period to welcome American University's new students to campus. This transition period provides a valuable opportunity for the building of the AU community by bringing together new students on campus. It is a time to encourage student involvement, boost school spirit, and create life-long memories. The week is packed with plenty of fun events from convocation, to Explore DC, to bingo, to free movies, to outdoor activities, and classroom tours. There's something for everyone during this incredible week! Below is a detailed schedule, including locations, offices, and event descriptions!

12 p.m. - 5 p.m.
First-Year Move-in: Day 1

Students from DC, MD, VA, WV, DE, NJ and PA, as well as early arrival students and international students are welcome to start moving into their residence halls. Please visit the Housing & Residence Life website for more information regarding move-in.

Level Placement is an assessment of students’ current dance skills. Participation provides students the opportunity to understand their dance skill sets in the university context, as well as offer guidance about which dance courses they should enroll in. In this class-type setting, students will learn and demonstrate exercises from various dance forms including African, Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, Tap and Urban. Faculty observe and assess students’ skills throughout the class, looking at each dancer holistically.

Guided Bike Ride

Participants will go on an hour-long (about 5 miles) bike ride in the campus community, guided by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association to learn about safe and fun city cycling. We will then provide a picnic lunch on campus. All level of cyclists welcome, but please plan to bring your own bike and helmet. Space is limited to 15 people, so RSVP is required. All participants must RSVP through the link provided by Sunday, August 19 at 5 p.m. to receive further instructions. In the event of rain, we will notify participants of a cancellation the day before.

Join President Sylvia Burwell for her second Opening Convocation as we open the academic year and formally welcome the Class of 2022 and incoming transfer students. Faculty, staff, and returning students will gather on the roadway and in the Bender lobby at 10:30 a.m. to greet the students as they enter the arena. 
First-Year Students Assemble: Enjoy refreshments provided by the American University Alumni Association and get your "official" Class of 2022 T-shirt to wear for the Convocation processional. Bagpipers will lead your class from the quad to Bender Arena at approximately 10:30 a.m.
Incoming Transfer Students Assemble: Transfer student will gather for refreshments in the Battelle-Tompkins Atrium and have the opportunity to meet other transfer students. A limited number of Class of 2020 and 2021 T-shirts will be available to wear. Join the procession from the quad to Bender Arena at approximately 10:30 a.m.
