Incorporating ‘JEDI’ Into Your Community-Based Courses

Participants will explore methods to bring a JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) framework to their community-engaged teaching and research. We will examine prominent inequity issues in the Washington DC area and the pivotal role that the nonprofit sector plays in addressing them. Faculty practitioners will share how they collaborate with local organizations to make these issues real to students.

By the end of this session, participants will:

  1. Brainstorm classroom activities and assignments that prompt students to reflect on the diversity of their identities;
  2. Understand how to ethically serve or conduct research in marginalized communities (i.e., how to avoid “white saviorism”);
  3. Learn how to establish relationships with nonprofit partners based on reciprocity and equitable power dynamics.
