Making AU's Mobile Strategy a Reality

Mobile App Prototype

With the rapid growth in utilization of mobile devices by students, faculty, and staff, American University took action to face the challenge of providing remote connectivity between these groups and the critical information found on university systems and in the cloud. We are pleased to announce that AU's mobile presence will be unveiled for a soft launch, by the end of the semester.

To meet the unique challenges of planning for this mobile environment, AU formed a cross-functional campus working group co-chaired by University Communications & Marketing and the Office of Information Technology. Recently, the group presented their findings to the University administration, based on the following activities:

  • Reviewing other higher education mobile sites
  • Interviewing campus stakeholders to better understand current and future needs
  • Conducting qualitative research
  • Reviewing the existing infrstructure
  • Evaluating and designing a proof of concept mobile site

The process yielded five basic principles as recommendations:

  • Focus on Students first
  • Implement a solution using device agnostic architectures
  • Leverage AU's robust, existing technology investments
  • Invest in continuous innovation to promote AU's mobile platform
  • Build a secure, scalable infrastructure with an eye to the future

Members of the AU community will be invited to try the new mobile site at the end of the semester. You will be able to access critical information or campus services, such as:

  • find courses in AU's schedule of classes
  • look-up AU faculty and staff in the people directory
  • access AU news
  • track the AU shuttle bus locations
  • perform a library search
  • discover what's on the menu at campus dining locations
  • look up IT system outage information
  • access the campus map
  • check the latest game times and scores for AU sports teams
  • connect with your school
  • read Today@AU announcements
  • access AU social media pages

Stayed tuned for more exciting information!
