American University Police expects its employees to conduct themselves in an ethical and professional manner, while providing a high level of customer service to our community. University Police employees will treat all persons having contact with them in a fair, equitable and objective manner, in accordance with the law and without consideration of their race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or any other bases under applicable federal and local laws. In addition, University Police follow all applicable university policies, to include the Staff Personnel Policy Manual. Feedback, both positive and negative, from our community is important to help us assess how we are meeting these expectations.

In addition to keeping the university community and our guests safe, American University Police Officers are trained to provide a high level of customer service.

If you encounter a University Police Officer who provided superior service or exceeded expectations, we invite you to share it by emailing police@american.edu with the date, approximate time, officer's name (if known), and a description of your interaction. 

The feedback will be shared with the officer and used to encourage that officer and their peers to continue to strive to excel in their service to the university community.

American University Police also invite the university community to submit general feedback in the form of comments or suggestions to police@american.edu. Your input helps us improve our services and tailor our programs to best meet the needs of the community. Please be as specific as possible and include the situation or context that prompted you to make the suggestion. 

American University Police Officers are staff members of the university and investigations of complaints are coordinated by Employee Relations in the university's Office of Human Resources, as laid out in the Staff Personnel Policies Manual and the Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Policy. Employee Relations is in a separate division from the University Police and will determine the best way to resolve the complaint.

Complaints about University Police Officers can be addressed to Employee Relations by email at employeerelations@american.edu. Please include the date, approximate time, name of the officer (if known), a detailed description of the incident, and your preferred means of being contacted.
