President Burwell’s Holiday Card Competition

President Burwell is looking for a fun and festive design for the front of the university’s annual holiday card. Students should submit their designs by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 15, 2018 to HolidayCard@American.edu.

Eligibility

To participate, you must be a full-time, regularly enrolled American University student in good academic and judicial standing. By submitting an entry, you agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.

Artwork Submission Guidelines

Artwork should portray AU’s holiday spirit. The contest is to determine cover art only; do not include words or messages in the final submissions.

The use of the AU logo is limited to the two logos available for download at the bottom of this page. The use of the AU logo is not required. Any design using the AU logo must follow the guidelines in the AU Creative Style Guide.

Designs may not include:

  • Reference or images related to specific holidays
  • Any elements that incorporate the copyright, trademark, or other intellectual property of any third party
  • Images of or references to an individual, alive or dead

Design Specifications

Artwork must meet the following design specifications:

  • Size: 7” x 5” with a .25” bleed (Safety zone is 6.75” x 4.75”)
  • Landscape or portrait
  • Artwork must be CMYK at 300 dpi
  • Accepted formats: PDF, EPS, AI, TIF, JPEG (full quality, uncompressed). If sending AI or EPS files, please convert all text to outlines
  • Original artwork only

How to Enter

Please download and complete this submission form and send it along with art files to HolidayCard@American.edu by Monday, October 15, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. Only one entry per person is permitted.

Deadline

The deadline to enter is Monday, October 15, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. Please email your entry to HolidayCard@American.edu. We will not accept late entries.

Other Submission Conditions

All entries become property of American University (“university”) and may be published in any format.

By entering this Competition, you represent and warrant that: (i) you are the sole author, creator, and owner of the artwork submitted; (ii) none of the intellectual property rights in the artwork submitted, or any portion thereof, has been assigned or transferred to anyone; (iii) the artwork submitted does not violate any applicable laws; and (iv) the artwork submitted does not infringe upon or violate intellectual property rights or privacy rights held by any third person or party.

By submitting your artwork, you give permission to the university to use, reproduce, publish, display and/or distribute your artwork for any purpose, including the inclusion of the submitted artwork on the university’s 2018 annual holiday card and the university’s websites, social media accounts, email, and marketing materials. You also agree that the university has the right to make changes to the submitted artwork, including but not limited to changes to content, image size or ink color. You also agree that no compensation shall be due to you for the granting of this license. In return, you can use the design in your personal portfolio. You hereby release American University, its officers, directors, agents, and employees from all liability or legal responsibility that may arise from the acts that you granted herein. You also expressly acknowledge that this artwork is your property.

The university reserves the right to refuse to display or use any submitted artwork in its sole discretion. The university also reserves the right at any time during and after the Competition to remove or disqualify any submitted artwork when it believes in its sole discretion that the entrant has: (i) infringed any third party's copyright or privacy rights; or (ii) failed to comply with these Competition terms.

In addition, you grant the university permission to use your name, likenesses, photograph, voice, and/or biographical information in conjunction with the submitted artwork.

Selection

All entries will be reviewed by a selection committee from the Offices of the President, Campus Life, and University Communications and Marketing. The committee will judge designs on creativity, artistic merit, and ability to portray AU’s holiday spirit. The winning artist will be notified October 30, 2018. The decision of the selection committee is final and incontestable.

The selection committee will select one winner. The winner’s submitted artwork will appear on the front of the university’s 2018 holiday card, and the winner will receive public recognition for the artwork. The winner will receive no monetary prize for being selected.

Additional Competition Terms

The Competition shall be governed by, construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the District of Columbia.

The university specifically reserves the right to amend or change these terms and conditions at any time for any reason. The university will communicate any such changes on its website.

Two versions of the American University logo are provided here as FPOs (for placement only). It is not a requirement to use the logo in the cover design. Any design using the AU logo must follow the guidelines in the AU Creative Style Guide.
