Dr. Carola Weil joined American University (AU) September 2012 as the inaugural dean of the School of Professional and Extended Studies; American University's newest faculty for life-long continuing and experiential learning for pre-collegiate to adult learners, including the University's flagship nearly 70 year old Washington Semester Program. She brings to AU more than 25 years of management, research and teaching experience in higher education, not-for-profit, policy and international settings. Prior to joining AU, Dr. Weil held multiple appointments with the University of Southern California (USC) Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, most recently as Associate Dean for Planning & Strategic Initiatives, and Director of International and Strategic Partnerships. She served as co-author and project coordinator for the FCC study on critical information needs of communities, and spearheaded a number of initiatives focused on enhancing diversity and inclusion. A scholar of international security, conflict transformation, and humanitarian intervention, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, she has held teaching and research appointments in international relations and public diplomacy at USC, George Washington University, and the Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. She was senior program officer in the US Institute of Peace’s grants and fellowship program, and in the German Friedrich Ebert Foundation's Washington, DC office. Weil served as executive director of the University of Maryland College Park Center for International Development and Conflict Management, and the not-for-profit, Women in International Security. A dual citizen of Germany and the US, Carola Weil is a multilingual globetrotter.


Dr. Weil holds an AB in History from Bryn Mawr College, and a Masters in Public Management and MA from University of Maryland College Park, where she also earned her PhD in Political Science.
