Bio
David Marchick serves as Dean of the Kogod School of Business at American University. In this role, he leads the school’s work to support more than 2,000 students and offer more than two dozen undergraduate and graduate degree and certification programs. He previously served as an Adjunct Professor at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth University.
Mr. Marchick served as Chief Operating Officer of the United States Development Finance Corporation during the first year of the Biden Administration. As the Biden Administration’s senior appointee at the agency, he managed agency priorities, oversaw business operations and led the agency’s work to support manufacturing of more than 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines in the development world.
Prior to joining the Biden Administration, he served for 16 months in a volunteer capacity as Director of the Center for Presidential Transition at the non-profit Partnership for Public Service.
At the Center for Presidential Transition, Marchick served as a key advisor to the Biden Transition Team from inception, coordinated with senior officials in the White House, and engaged with more than 100 federal agencies on transition planning efforts. He hosted the podcast Transition Lab and is the co-author of the forthcoming book, The Peaceful Transition of Power: An Oral History of Presidential Transitions due to be published in the fall, 2022, by the University of Virginia Press.
Mr. Marchick spent 12 years at the Carlyle Group as Managing Director and as a Member of Carlyle’s Management Committee. He led Carlyle’s global regulatory and government affairs, communications and branding, events, research and sustainability functions, and had broad responsibility for engaging with Carlyle’s investors. He launched Carlyle’s sustainability initiatives and helped drive both the firm’s and the industry’s diversity efforts. Mr. Marchick was part of the core team to take Carlyle public and helped manage Carlyle’s public reporting and quarterly earnings reports. At Carlyle, he built strong relationships with organized labor, earning him the United Steelworkers “Solidarity and Appreciation Award” in 2013.
Prior to joining Carlyle, Mr. Marchick was a partner at and Vice Chair of the International Group at Covington where his practice focused on international trade, CFIUS, transportation, and legislative matters.
Mr. Marchick held several positions within the Clinton Administration over a seven-year period, including Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Transportation Affairs, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Trade Policy at the State Department, and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Trade Development. He also served in the White House, where he worked on NAFTA and the WTO Agreements, and at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
Mr. Marchick has served on numerous non-profit boards and advisory committees including the Holocaust Memorial Museum; as Chairman of the board of directors of the Robert Toigo Foundation, the leading non-profit diversity organization in the finance industry; and the National Council for the National Park Foundation. He also serves on corporate boards.
Mr. Marchick holds a law degree from the George Washington University, a Masters in Public Affairs from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, and a BA from the University of California at San Diego.
