Robert (Bob) Sweeney is a successful businessman, entrepreneur, educational leader and non-profit executive. Over the course of his career, he has built organizations from the ground up, led investor groups in the purchase and disposition of real estate as well as athletic events, and thrived in the business arena in the Greater Washington area. Sweeney joined the American University Kogod School of Business team in April,2015 to lead the effort to position Kogod as the worlds leading business school focused on the study of the Greater Washington economy. Sweeney brings his vast experience in the local business community focused on better understanding the nuances of doing business in the capital which will bring recognition to the school and faculty at American University and ultimately attract high caliber students. Sweeney was the Founder and President of DC 2024, the regional group assembled to bring the Olympics to Washington DC in 2024. DC2024 made significant strides in bringing the Greater Washington region together to rally around a common goal, to host the world in 2024. He helped raise over $5 Million through business and philanthropic support. Sweeney is most widely known as the first-ever President/CEO of the Greater Washington Sports Alliance where he began in October 2003. He built a prominent board of directors, developed the Alliance mission, created the Sports Collaborative to nurture and grow fledgling youth investment organizations in the sports arena, and molded the Sports Alliance to be a critical organization in Washington’s business community. Under his leadership, the Greater Washington Sports Alliance has become one of the preeminent Sports Commissions in the country. He led efforts to help bring professional franchises (MLB’s Washington Nationals and MLL’s Washington Bayhawks) to the District of Columbia as well as landing major events like the Rock n Roll Marathon, NCAA Frozen Four, the Army-Navy Game, and the 2015 World Police and Fire Games. He remains tireless in his efforts to link the professional business community to sports in the greater Washington region and brand DC as a sports town. Sweeney has leveraged his leadership in the business community to raise over $30 million dollars to directly impact the youth of the Greater Washington area by spearheading an effort to utilize sports to build leadership skills. Before heading the Greater Washington Sports Alliance, Bob was the Vice President of DC Agenda, leading the organization’s community development activities since October 2000. Sweeney created the nationally recognized equitable development initiative and guided “Collaboration DC”, a project which assists government, business and neighborhood leaders in collaborative planning and decision-making, negotiation and mediation techniques. Prior to joining DC Agenda, Sweeney was with the Greater Washington Initiative, the economic development arm of the Greater Washington Board of Trade. He was the Vice President responsible for all efforts to attract businesses to the Washington D.C. market from around the globe. He cut his teeth in economic development while working for the nationally acclaimed Office of Economic Development for Arlington Virginia and has continued to foster these international relationships. Sweeney is a graduate of West Virginia University with a degrees in history and philosophy. Sweeney and his wife of 23 years, Colleen, have four children; Quinnlan, age 19; Kenley, age 15; and twin 8 year-old sons, Finnian and Wyatt. When he is not working, relaxing at the lake, or playing games with his children, Bob can be found perfecting his putt on the golf course.
