American University invites multi-year term faculty to submit material for placement for Academic Year 2021-22.
Faculty with any full-time multi-year faculty appointment in the School of Professional and Extended Studies are eligible to submit materials for placement for AY 2021-22. One-year term faculty placement and adjunct teaching assignments will be determined by separate processes.
Program Qualifications include:
- ELTA—Minimum of a Master’s degree from an accredited university with experience in Academic English at the college level. Preference is given to applicants with a Master’s in TESOL, a related field, or equivalent experience, and strong interpersonal skills with evidence of a high level of cultural sensitivity. Preference will be given to faculty who can teach reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
- WSP/Gap—An earned PhD or terminal degree from an accredited university. Favored fields include: American Politics, Government, International Affairs, Strategic Communications, Journalism, International Business, Economics, Sustainable Development, Global Health, Justice and Law.
- Cornerstone (formerly Mentorship)—An earned PhD or terminal degree from an accredited university. Special consideration will be given to faculty capable of supervising the Mentored Field Practicum.
- GPS—An earned Master’s degree or terminal degree in academic area from an accredited university. Professional experience a plus. Must possess professional and academic experience for the fields of: HRAM, HCM, SAM, M&E.
- Intercultural Understanding (IU)—An earned Master's degree from an accredited university with experience in cross-cultural education.
- Complex Problems (CP)—Only those faculty who have already proposed and/or approved CP courses (or those who have previously taught a CP course) will be considered for teaching CP.
Position Duties include:
- The ELTA/IU faculty are expected to regularly attend unit meetings, participate in curriculum development, assist in orientation and test administration, and provide outstanding instruction to students of varying levels of English proficiency. Position appointees will work under the supervision of the ELTA Director.
- The WSP/Gap faculty are expected to regularly attend unit meetings, participate in curriculum development, assist in orientation, provide outstanding instruction to students, and network and engage high-level professionals for participation in speaker sessions and site visits. Position appointees will work under the supervision of a Director of the Washington Semester Programs.
- The Graduate Professional Studies—Faculty responsibilities include regularly attending unit meetings, equipping students with the required skill set, facilitating online discussions, assessing student performance and preparing students to be successful leaders in their chosen profession. Courses are asynchronous, fully online, and offered over eight-week terms. This is a fully online program geared toward mid-career professionals. Position appointees will work under the supervision of the Dean of Graduate Studies.
- Internship Classes—Faculty applying must be prepared to engage students up to six-weeks prior to the term start for pre-program contact and onboarding. Responsibilities include review of resumes and cover letters, providing support in the internship search/decision making processes, mentoring students on their internship experiences, and holding internship/professional development classes.
These positions will require the instructor to teach the equivalent of three, three to four credit or non-credit courses per semester. All FT faculty members are expected to hold regular office hours, conduct (or in the case of GPS, record) lectures and discussions, and participate in school/college and University activities and service. Faculty outside of GPS are required to deliver quality, inclusive syllabi before the semester and assign engaging and inclusive readings. WSP, Gap, and Cornerstone faculty must deliver detailed syllabi that reflect inclusivity in topics, readings, and speaker engagements.
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until April 26th at 5:00 pm EST. Faculty should submit materials to DeanofFaculty@american.edu. All multi-year faculty will be placed whether or not materials are submitted, but additional consideration regarding placement will be given to those who submit materials.
Applications should include:
- Two-page statement
- Explain which courses in a program(s) for which you are applying to teach.
- Discuss your approach to teaching in terms of meeting learning outcomes and meeting the academic needs of diverse learners.
- Specify preferred Unit of placement.
- Updated CV
- Please list all university-level courses you have instructed. If it is not clear, please indicate all courses you are qualified to teach, including Complex Problems courses that are already approved or in which you are interested teaching.
- If these courses are not listed on your CV, a separate list is acceptable.
- Optional: You may include one syllabus, assignment, or course material(s) of your own course creation that demonstrates your teaching philosophy and approach to instruction
