Omnibus Criteria for the Reappointment and Promotion of Term Faculty as adopted by the Biology Department

Biology Department Term Faculty Reappointment, Promotion requirements & definitions: For Reappointment

• Teaches assigned coursework

• Responds to students in a timely & reasonable manner with respect to the type of assessment

• Participates in minimum level* of service

• Participates in course evaluations, conducts and receives one (1) peer observation per academic year & responds appropriately to improve pedagogy

• Updates courses/labs when appropriate

For Multi-year contract

• Teaches or is willing to teach a wide range of courses (both in content & level of students)

• 5+ in SETs & good reports from peer observation

• Service to the department, college and University in teaching/committees/program directing OR significant contribution to course/curriculum development

For Promotion
Professorial Lecturer Sequence

• Demonstrates excellence in teaching & currency in field**

• Mentoring of students outside the classroom (includes undergraduates, graduates, Undergraduate Teaching Assistants (UTA’s), Supplemental Instructors (SI’s), thesis committee participation)

• Mentoring of faculty

• Service to the college and/or University

Assistant, Associate, Professor Sequence

• Demonstrates excellence in teaching & currency in field**

• Mentoring of students outside the classroom (includes undergraduates, graduates, Undergraduate Teaching Assistants (UTA’s), Supplemental Instructors (SI’s), thesis committee participation)

• Mentoring of faculty

• Service to the college and/or University

• Rank-appropriate research productivity

Note: Term faculty seeking promotion on the Assistant, Associate, Professor sequence have to meet the same promotion and tenure requirements as tenure line faculty, absent the major grant requirement. These requirements may be met over any time period. In the event of an unsuccessful promotion case, the faculty member retains the current rank and may seek promotion at a later date.

This is what Biology means by:

*Departmental Minimum service level = in the first 1-3 years, participate in 1 committee and 1 event per year, and after 3+ years participate in 2 or more committees and 2 or more events per year.

Service includes: Departmental, College and University-level committees, outreach/admissions events both on or off campus.

**Excellence in teaching & Currency in field includes a subset of, but not necessarily all, of the following depending on rank:

• Uses assessments to improve teaching

• SETs, peer observation & response to both

• Updating course materials (including readings, labs, assessments, rubrics & techniques)

• Attend and/or present at regional, national or international meetings or conferences.

• Participate in Faculty Learning Community @ AU

• Participate in broadening participation either on or off campus (broadening participation is defined as increasing access to science from traditionally underrepresented groups).

• Mentoring faculty and/or students in teaching/research

Peer Observation includes: Labs, classrooms, lab prep & training for lab coordinator, and TA feedback too.
