TO: American University Community
FROM: Scott A. Bass, Provost
SUBJECT: Jill Klein, Interim Dean-Designate, School of Professional and Extended Studies

I am pleased to announce that Interim Executive Director of the Center for Teaching, Research, and Learning (CTRL), Jill Klein, will serve as the interim dean of the School of Professional and Extended Studies (SPExS), beginning June 2, 2018. As interim dean, she will be responsible for the school’s overall management for the next year.

Professor Klein has been dividing her time between her responsibilities at CTRL, Kogod, and SPExS, as interim associate dean of Graduate Programs and Online Learning (GPOL), where she has been working closely with Dean Carola Weil.

In the 17 years Professor Klein has worked at American University, she has held various positions at AU, starting as the program director of the MS Information Technology Management in Kogod, and program director for the Professional MBA program in Kogod. She later became assistant dean of Digital Initiatives at Kogod, where she worked in that capacity until last year when she was appointed as the interim executive director of CTRL and interim associate dean of GPOL in SPExS. She has also served on several committees including the Online Learning Leadership Committee, the Enterprise Technology Steering Committee, and the Academic Technology Steering Committee.

Several factors make Professor Klein well-prepared for this role; her work this year at SPExS has provided an immersive opportunity to learn about the school’s programs, its faculty, staff, and students; and her previous experience and success as assistant dean of Digital Initiatives at Kogod. This provided relevant management and administrative experience, well suited to SPExS.

At the end of this one-year, interim dean appointment, Professor Klein anticipates returning to her appointment in the Kogod School of Business. During this transition period, Dean Weil, who will depart for her deanship at McGill University on June 1, and Professor Klein will begin planning for a smooth onboarding at SPExS.

Please join me in thanking Interim Dean-Designate Klein.
