SUBJECT:  Appointment of Jonathan G. Tubman as Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Jonathan G. Tubman as Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research, effective July 1, 2011. Dr. Tubman joins AU from Florida International University where he is Associate Vice President for Research Integrity and Compliance and a Professor of Psychology. He holds an A.B. from the University of Chicago, and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Tubman’s academic research has focused on developmental processes underlying relations among substance use, mental health and health risk behavior during adolescence. He is a co-author of Prevention and Youth Development Programs: Across Borders and has written fifty-seven other peer reviewed publications and book chapters. He recently completed a $2.4 million grant on a brief motivational intervention for HIV risk reduction among youth receiving outpatient substance abuse treatment services from the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, an agency that he has served as the principal or co-investigator for over $10.74 million in grant funding.

The experience that Dr. Tubman brings to the areas of graduate studies and research is extensive. As a previous Associate Dean at FIU’s University Graduate School and the Graduate Chair of the Psychology Department, Dr. Tubman has overseen the implementation of multiple initiatives at the interface of graduate education and research. These include policy development, graduate program reviews, graduate recruitment and admissions, development of new programs, and graduate student support and enrichment. As an Associate Vice President for Research, he has undertaken numerous roles overseeing research committees, offices, and programs. He has also coordinated the review of externally funded programs to ensure that they continue to fulfill the university’s strategic planning goals, as well as federal and state research compliance requirements.

Dr. Tubman’s record in university administration will assist us in a smooth transition from the greatly appreciated leadership provided by Dr. Rosemary Wander. I want to thank the Search Committee, under Bill LeoGrande’s leadership, for its diligent efforts during this entire process. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Tubman to American University.
