Students who deposit by Nov 15 are guaranteed Gap housing for the Spring 2022 semester. We cannot guarantee housing for students who deposit after November 15th, and definintively cannot provide housing for students who deposit after December 1st.

*The AU Gap Program aligns with the American University Academic Calendar.

Applicants must meet the minimum university requirements for undergraduate study (high school diploma) and possess a minimum of a 3.0 high school GPA. Admission decisions are based on each applicant's academic record, essays, recommendations, and motivations to have a Gap Program experience. Additionally, we assess other characteristics such as maturity, leadership, personal character and potential contribution to the American University community.

The fall and spring AU GAP program is open to U.S. students only.

  1. Create an account.
  2. After you have created an account, complete the application.
  3. After you have submitted the first portion of your application, you must return to your account and complete supplemental items (once you refresh the page, supplemental items should be an option).

    Note: Your application will not be considered until you have submitted the required supplemental items.

In addition to the online application, applicants must submit either electronically (upload with your application) or via mail:

  • Official copy of current high school transcript or international equivalent
  • Letter of Recommendation from a high school academic counselor
  • Letter of Recommendation from an extracurricular or community contact

Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements and have a complete application will be invited for a phone interview with the AU Gap Program before a final admissions decision is made. If the applicant is local to the DC, MD, VA area, applicants are welcome to request an in-person interview.

Deferring American University Students

Deferring AU Student Application Instructions

  1. Login to the Gap application with your AU username and password. You can start a new application for the “GAP Program – Fall 2021 semester”.
  2. Fill out all required fields (which are marked with asterisks *).
  3. Please select “Pre-College” when asked which type of study in which you would like to enroll.
  4. For the Short Answer Questions, please use this as an opportunity to let the Gap team know why you are interested in taking a gap semester, and what type of internships you are interested in pursuing through the AU Gap Program. Please note that you do NOT have to use 500 words to answer each question.
  5. Once you have submitted your application, upload your high school academic transcript to the application portal.
  6. Please reach out to augap@american.edu when you have successfully submitted your application and uploaded your transcript. At this point, our team will waive your letters of recommendation, and email you to arrange a time to meet over Zoom.
