Admission steps and requirements depend on whether you attend a partner school. Please confirm your partner school status and follow the steps below.

Before You Apply
Undergraduate students can enroll in the Washington Semester Program Fall and/or Spring semesters. Students need to have:
- A college GPA of 2.5/4.0 or higher
- At least 36 earned university credits (or the home school equivalent). Dual enrollment credits do count, but AP/IB credits do not count, towards earned university credits for WSP enrollment eligibility.
Students can apply for admission to the Washington Semester Program with at least 24 earned undergraduate credits (or the home school equivalent).
Students with at least 24 earned undergraduate credits (or the home school equivalent) can apply for conditional admission to the Washington Semester Program, contingent on:
- Proof of enrollment in 12 or more credits during the semester in which you apply (confirmed with an unofficial transcript submitted with your application)
- Upon completion of the semester in which you apply, you must submit an official transcript to washsem@american.edu at least 30 days before the start of the semester in which you plan to enroll.
If you attend a partner institution:
- Contact your home school's Washington Semester Program partner representative to learn about your home school's policies on credit transfer, financial aid, and any home school requirements/deadlines to study off campus.
- Your home school Washington Semester Program representative will explain the internal application requirements to apply to the program. Complete your home school's requirements.

If you do not attend a partner institution:
- Check with your home school advisor or study off-campus office on Washington Semester Program credit transfer, financial aid, and any home school requirements to study off-campus.

How to Apply
- Once you have completed your home school requirements, create an account.
- After you have created an account, complete the application.
- After you have submitted the first portion of your application, you must return to your account and complete supplemental items (once you refresh the page, supplemental items should be an option).
Note: Your application will not be considered until you have submitted the required supplemental items.
Supplemental Items
If you attend a partner institution:
- Official transcript from your home institution
- Approval from your home institution's representative.
If you are unable to identify your home institution's representative, please contact us at washsem@american.edu
If you do NOT attend a partner institution:
- Official transcript from your home institution
- Academic letter of recommendation
Please submit all supplemental items electronically. Your certified electronic transcript should be sent to ogisdocuments@american.edu through your home institution. If your institution cannot issue an electronic copy, please let us know at washsem@american.edu.
