Welcome to OIRA's interactive data visualizations. The visualizations use a variety of aggregate student, faculty, and staff data from administrative data and surveys that allow users to customize information.
OIRA will continue to add new visualizations overtime so please revisit this page for updated content. If you have any questions about the visualization or the data, please contact us at oira@american.edu.
Student Diversity Visualizations
The student diversity section presents disaggregated data on race/ ethnicity, gender, Pell Grant recipients, and first-generation students. The visualizations include (1) University Composition, (2) Undergraduate Applicant, Admission, and Enrollment trends, (3) Undergraduate Student Retention, and (4) Undergraduate Graduation Count and Rates. The data is snapshot taken as of the AU census and the most updated census data is of the September 29, 2018.
Faculty visualizations contain data visuals on American University faculty. The faculty diversity visuals show the racial and ethnic composition and gender of faculty members at American University. Race/ethnicity and gender data is self-reported by faculty to HR.
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) represent empirically confirmed "good practices" in undergraduate education. Survey results point to areas where colleges and universities are performing well and aspects of the undergraduate experience that could be improved. NSSE visualization showcases student responses to select questions and allows the user to examine responses by different identity groups, including race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability status, first generation status, and class.
- Composition– For each fall semester, the race and gender composition of enrolled students by degree level.
- Retention – For each entering cohort (the group of students who enrolled at AU for the first time in a particularly year), the percent who are still enrolled or have graduated in a subsequent year.
- Graduation – For each entering cohort (the group of students who enrolled at AU for the first time in a particularly year), the number of students who graduated and what percent graduated.
