Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) Frequently Asked Questions - Students

  • What login do I use?
    Blue uses a Single Sign-On technology, which allows users to authenticate with their myAU portal credentials. Blue is currently only accessible to instructors who manage section surveys, or students who complete SETs.
  • Why isn’t my login working?
    Do note that the SET system typically prefers you use your log-on without the “@american.edu” following the username. For example, if your username is “OIRA_SET@american.edu” try logging-on with just “OIRA_SET” in the username. If your credentials still are not working and do allow you to logon elsewhere at AU (for example into the myAU portal or Blackboard) please contact the SET team for help (OIRA_SET@american.edu). If the attempted set of login credentials do not work, please contact the OIT Help Desk for assistance at 202-885-2550 or helpdesk@american.edu.
  • I am unable to submit my survey and it has not expired yet. What do I need to do?
    The survey can only be saved but not submitted prior to reaching the last page. If the submit button is grayed out, most commonly, there are still remaining pages to complete. The last page will read “End of Questionnaire” and will have an active “Submit” button.
  • My survey expired before I was able to submit or complete it. Can it be re-opened?
    American University has yielded control of the survey timing to the instructors. Instructors can, during the lifetime of their section SET, modify the SET start and end dates as they see fit. If there is an instance where a survey is unable to be completed due to it expiring, it is necessary to contact the instructor directly to see if they are able to re-open it. There are certain administrative restrictions and deadlines related to section close-out, so it is not always possible for an instructor to reopen a survey.
  • How are survey results kept anonymous? What does the instructor see in reports versus what is posted on the myAUportal?
    Survey results will remain anonymous because instructors can only see responses from the entire class and they are not individually identified. Additionally, the responses/data are only made available after final grades are posted. The instructor can see the data aggregated across responses for both the close-ended and open-ended (comments) questions. Only data related to the close-ended questions is posted on the myAUportal and only if the survey had at least 6 responses.
