The School of Communication's (SOC) distinguished research advances knowledge, produces innovative media production techniques, and shapes public discourses about the great problems of our time.
The School is organized into four divisions - Communication Studies, Film and Media Arts, Journalism, and Public Communication - with 850 undergraduate and 350 graduate students. Programs of study include Bachelor of Arts degrees in Communication Studies, Film and Media Arts, Journalism, and Public Communication and Master of Arts degrees in International Media, Film and Video, Media Entrepreneurship, Interactive Journalism, Journalism and Public Affairs, Political Communication, and Strategic Communication, ranked one of the top 5 programs in the United States. The School also offers an MFA in Film and Electronic Media and an innovative three-year PhD in Communication. Recent graduate students have a 92% job placement rate.
Our world-class faculty have earned prestigious awards - Guggenheim Fellowships, Fulbright Fellowships, Pulitzer Prizes, Oscars, and Emmy Awards. Prominent areas of research include the role of social media in political movements, knowledge-centered journalism, climate change debates, online advertising, persuasive gaming, Internet governance, and the future of digital journalism. Faculty work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Academies of Science, and private foundations including the MacArthur Foundation and the Ford Foundation. Our scholars present their research in the world's most prestigious universities and institutions and regularly appear in all of the top journalistic outlets. They publish in the top peer-reviewed journals and the most prominent peer-reviewed university presses. They testify before congressional hearings and influence policy debates in the world's leading governmental and nongovernmental institutions.
The School of Communication's research centers serve as concentrated hubs for public purpose research and media work and help translate research into broader public impacts. The Center for Social Media studies media as tools for public knowledge and action, focusing on documentary films and public media that support civil society and democracy. The renowned Investigative Reporting Workshop undertakes high-impact and difficult investigative reporting projects and serves as a laboratory for new models and techniques for conducting and delivering investigative journalism. The J-Lab Institute for Interactive Journalism helps journalists and citizens use digital technologies to develop new ways of participating in public life. The Center for Environmental Filmmaking produces films and new media that effectively promote conservation but are entertaining, ethically sound, and educationally powerful. The Climate Shift Project conducts research on communication, culture, and advocacy around climate change science and public policy.
The School of Communication's state-of-the-art Media Production Center delivers the school's research to the world and enables advanced digital production-integrated media research. The Media Production Center, located on campus at the base of a soaring broadcast tower, houses a fully digital HD television production studio, a broadcast news lab for both journalistic research and news production, three professional digital audio editing suites with professional-grade mixing boards, thirteen digital video editing suites equipped with Mac Pro computers, Sony HDV VTR, NTSC video monitors, and various digital media production applications including Adobe's Design Premium Creative Suite. The School of Communication itself is housed in a meticulously renovated green building and fully digital communication facility known as the venerable McKinley building, which includes media innovation labs, advanced communication technologies, a focus group teleconference suite, and a 150-seat theater for master classes and screenings.
