- Instructions to faculty and staff: You will receive an email notification once the form has been submitted by a student, and you will be requested to review and approve the registration request prior to processing by the OUR.

- Instructions to students: Gather the following information before initiating the form: course subject, number, number of credits, faculty supervisor name, and your academic advisor's name.

- For SIS undergraduate students: please read the instructions for registering an independent study, available at: https://www.american.edu/sis/undergradadvising/internships-abroad-more.cfm, before submitting this form. Students must attach a completed, signed, and approved SIS Independent Study Supplement Form before being registered.
- For SIS graduate students: please read the instructions for registering an independent study, available at: http://www.american.edu/sis/gradadvising/registration-requirements-forms.cfm#collapse-4780715 before submitting this form. Students must attach a description of their research topic/question specific to the type of project being registered (e.g. SRP vs Thesis. For details, refer to the registration instructions).
