Section Title: American Civil Religion
Colloquium in Religious Studies: American Civil Religion (1) This colloquium considers whether the United States of America a Christian nation or whether is some other religious expression truly at the heart of American life. Students explore the phenomenon of American Civil Religion and its interactions with and frequent displacement of Christianity in the cultural mainstream. Students explore the originating ideas of ACR, its sacred times, the institutions that perpetuate it, and its mission.

Section Title: Religion and Human Rights
Religion and Human Rights (1) Religion and human rights intersect in a variety of ways: religious leaders have played critical roles in speaking out on behalf of struggles for rights protections, human rights discourse is shot through with religious ideas, and, of course, religious traditions are sometimes an impediment to the realization of human rights. This course surveys these intersections, examining the role of theological ethics in the construction of human rights norms and the role of religious actors in responding to contemporary human rights challenges.

Section Title: Spirituality
Spirituality, Unaffiliation, and Atheism (1) To a significant degree, courses in religious studies concentrate on longstanding, institutionalized forms of religious tradition. This course looks to the contemporary phenomena of people who describe themselves as "spiritual, but not religious" and the rising numbers of people who are not affiliated with any religious tradition or who outright reject religion itself. The course considers how these trends should be understood and what kinds of tool and research methods can be used to understand these potentially transformative developments.
