Geology of the Turkana Basin (3) This course, offered as a part of the AU Abroad program in Turkana Basin, Kenya introduces current perspectives on the origins and evolution of the region. Students learn to apply fundamental geological concepts to sediments and rock units to provide a foundation for the chronology and context for events in human evolution.

Ecology of the Lake Turkana Basin (3) This course, offered as a part of the AU Abroad program in Turkana Basin, Kenya, is an in-depth study of basic field ecology in the context of the modern East African Lake Turkana environment. Including a mixture of fieldwork, lectures, seminars, and readings, students identify common invasive and endemic plant species as well as recognize important evolutionary and ecological patterns and issues.

Environments, Ecosystems and Evolution (3) This course, offered as a part of the AU Abroad Nairobi program, takes place at the Turkana Basin Institute (TBI) and offers an introduction to the ways scientists use fossil and archaeological records to learn about past changes in Earth's climates, environments, and animal communities, and how humanity's ancestors responded.

Course Type: Community Based Learning. As a part of this course, students will actively serve with a nonprofit agency or school in the DC area to apply their course knowledge. Atmospheric Biology (3) Neglected since World War II, atmospheric biology has attracted renewed interest due to its potential effects on cloud formation, the water cycle, and regional climate change. Its research tools reside at scalar extremes, from molecular to global satellite imaging. Atmospheric biota contribute to atmospheric aerosols and aerosols are the wild card in climate forecasting, greenhouse gas effect aside. Atmospheric biology matters because it has untapped potential to influence ecosystem services, food security, climate change mitigation, and human health. As a consequence, the time-honored discipline of atmospheric biology is undergoing a renaissance. Students are encouraged to fully explore the full importance of atmospheric biology.

Remote Sensing (3) Satellite and aerial imagery allow for analysis of environmental conditions and dynamism at every point on earth nearly every day. This course introduces multispectral (e.g., Landsat, MODIS) and hyperspectral imagery as well as lidar (light detection and ranging) data in the context of quantitative ecological analysis. Topics include remote sensing physical bases, sensors, applications, and methods. Through a combination of lectures, labs, and a project, students implement remote sensing analyses independently, from data acquisition to generating actionable information. Meets with ENVS-696 001.
