My background as a political asylum seeker in the US and my family’s challenges adapting to US culture fostered a life-long interest in cultural adaptation and cross-cultural communication. I began my professional career as a broadcast journalist hosting APR’s MonitoRadio broadcasts to Latin America and serving as an On-Air Radio Host, news writer and reporter for the NPR affiliate in New York City. I wrote several feature stories on New Yorkers who bridged cultural and racial barriers. Hoping to make more of a difference in the lives of culturally diverse Americans, I obtained an MS in education and began teaching ELL at-risk pregnant teens in California. I became interested in the plight of Mexican migrant workers and focused much of my initial college teaching experience on honing the language and critical thinking skills of ELL students to help them overcome cultural and income barriers. I've taught communication, education and humanities courses at several colleges and universities in the US and Spain. My PhD is from the University of Málaga in Spain, focusing on the cultural adaptation of Spanish professionals in the US. I love learning languages and I'm fluent in English, Spanish and French and have studied German and Italian.
