INTERCULTURAL MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE HOSTS THE 16TH ANNUAL IMI CONFERENCE ON INTERCULTURAL RELATIONS

The 16th Annual Intercultural Management Institute Conference on Intercultural Relations was held on March 12th and 13th in the renowned School of International Service at American University. Over 200 intercultural relations professionals in fields ranging from education to business to diplomacy came together to share their research and skills with colleagues in the field.

The conference began with a speech from IMI's Executive Director and leading intercultural relations expert, Gary Weaver. The two-day conference featured 38 sessions across five tracks that included international education, exchanges and training;diversity and inclusion;diplomacy;business;and cross-cutting topics in intercultural relations. Attendees learned experimental techniques, engaged in discussion about cutting-edge training methods and shared innovative ideas.

Conference participants received two engaging and informative keynote addresses from the Vice President of Community Relations for Coca Cola, Lori George Billingsley and author of Rebel Music: Race, Empire and the New Muslim Youth Culture, Hisham Aidi. The keynote address on Thursday, led by Lori George Billingsley, informed participants on the importance of diversity and inclusion in media campaigns and the role that the Coca Cola company and it's brand has had in intercultural relations. On the final day of the conference, Hisham Aidi discussed the history of Islam in music, in particular its effects on youth and hip-hop culture, topics that were covered in his book that all participants received a copy of.

This conference proved to be an effective venue for equipping participants with a toolkit of resources to apply to their own work, and a platform for intellectual conversations around the field of intercultural relations. For Relationship Manager from the Yale school of Management, Nicolle Merrill, this year's conference offered an interactive and valuable experience. She stated, "The conference was packed with perspective and practical tools that will be incredibly useful in my work. I have been in the field for ten years and I can't recommend [this conference] enough to my network. Excellent content!"

After a successful and productive conference, IMI is already looking toward the future. IMI provides customized training workshops throughout the year for effective communication, negotiation and leadership across cultures.
