Scholarships

We offer a total of 23 scholarship awards to students who apply. The requirements for each scholarship are detailed below.

Scholarship applications are due by March 1, 2022. Scholarship recipients will be notified on a rolling basis, no later than April 1st.

Scholarship Information

Along with the application, some scholarships will require a student essay or a parent statement. Please refer to the application and the information below for more information. 

Ten partial scholarships are available. Students must be eligible for free or reduced price school meals (as documented by school counselor). Students must also send in the following with a completed application:

  1. Current report card/transcript (minimum 2.8 GPA)
  2. Counselor/Teacher recommendation form
  3. Student essay indicating interest in attending the program
  4. Completed DWC Registration Form

There are three ($800) scholarships available. Students must send in the following with a completed application:

  1. Current report card/transcript (minimum 2.8 GPA)
  2. Counselor/Teacher recommendation form
  3. Student essay indicating interest in attending the program
  4. Parent statement indicating need for financial assistance
  5. Must be a sophomore or junior in the fall before the summer program
  6. Completed DWC Registration Form

Eight $3,550 scholarships are available. Students who have enrolled in Cinema Classroom with the Avalon will have first consideration. To view the 2019 Avalon Scholars watch this video. Students will take one of the following courses, the second course can be any course in the catalog of their choosing:

  • Scriptwriting and Video Production
  • Documentary Production 
  • Directing for Camera
  • Animation 
  • Environmental and Advanced Filmmaking

  2. School attendance report for the school year
  3. Counselor/Teacher recommendation form
  4. Student essay indicating interest in attending the program

The Center for Environmental Filmmaking is sponsoring competivite scholarships in the amount of $800 for two students. Students applying for this scholarship may choose from the following courses:

  • Documentary Filmmaking: for students who will produce a short documentary on environmental issues.
  • Nature Photography: for students who will create a photo essay.
  • Animation: for students who will produce an environmenal animation short.

The American University Center for Media and Social Impact (CMSI) is sponsoring one comptitive scholarship in the amount of $800 for the following course:

  • Documentary Filmmaking: for students who will produce a short documentary on social justice issues.
