- Janis Teruggi Page, Ph.D. joined AU in 2014 as a full-time professor of Public Communication. Her research and consulting expertise focuses on the visual rhetoric of strategic and political communication. In her prior 20-year executive career, she directed strategic communication, marketing, public relations, and creative services for U.S. business and consumer magazine publishers, including Cahners Publishing and Emmis Communications, and Sunset and Chicago magazines. She continues to be partner in MediaWerks, a public relations consultancy. Since beginning her academic career in 2005, Dr. Page has taught as a full-time faculty member at the University of Florida, Purdue University, FIT, and Zayed University, Abu Dhabi; and as an adjunct for Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University and for the Graduate School of Political Management, George Washington University. Dr. Page is the author of 40 book chapters, journal articles, and conference papers. Her research on political campaign visual messaging and issue advertising in social media won “top faculty paper” in the visual communication division at AEJMC both in 2013 and 2014. Her doctoral dissertation, “What we see on HGTV: Toward a theory of visual narrative” advanced analysis of multimodal visuals. She is currently co-authoring a textbook on visual communication. At AU, Dr. Page teaches Understanding Media to undergraduates and Communication Theory to graduate students. Prior to AU, she has instructed undergraduate courses in public relations and strategic communication; graduate courses in magazine publishing, IMC, theory, and corporate social responsibility; public diplomacy seminars in professional communication and media training to Middle Eastern diplomats; and has led visual communication study abroad programs in Argentina, France, Greece, and Spain. She also has strong interests in human rights issues in Chile.
DegreesA native of suburban Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Page earned her doctorate at the University of Missouri School of Journalism; her master’s at the National College of Education; and a B.A. in English at the University of California-Berkeley.
