John Sullivan, Washington Post investigative reporter, senior editor at the Investigative Reporting Workshop, and professor at American University School of Communication (AU SOC), can now add the Milton and Sonia Greenberg Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award to his list of accomplishments. Before coming to AU, Sullivan worked for nearly a decade at The Philadelphia Inquirer, where his reporting earned numerous national awards including the Pulitzer Prize.

Sullivan leads a practicum for students enrolled in the Journalism & Public Affairs MA program concentrating in investigative journalism. Through Sullivan, students are embedded on the Post's investigative unit, covering stories from government to crime to social issues. Students, with Sullivan's mentorship, get valuable hands-on experience as an investigative reporter.

The Milton and Sonia Greenberg Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award recognizes faculty who promote systematic analysis of the practice of teaching along with application of researched-based approaches to instruction and curriculum design. The winning faculty member receives $3,000 in the form of a stipend.

Students are direct beneficiaries of Sullivan's dedication to his teaching. Kristian Hernandez, who is pursuing his MA in journalism, said, "John Sullivan has been more than a teacher, he's been a mentor. He's always been open, honest and taken the time to help me figure out my path in journalism. Without him, I wouldn't have pushed myself as far as I did this year and I would have missed out on all the wonderful lessons and experiences I've had sitting next to him at the Washington Post."

Sullivan will be recognized at a luncheon May 16 in the Abramson Family Founders Hall in SIS at 12 p.m.
