AU SOE Land Acknowledgement Statement

DC at night

The School of Education wants to acknowledge that Washington DC is the traditional territory of Nacotchtank/Anacostan/Piscataway people. At American University’s School of Education, we acknowledge this legacy and find inspiration from this land. See map here.

Territory or land acknowledgement is our way of recognizing Indigenous presence in our everyday life as a School. We, SOE faculty, staff, and students, have a responsibility to consider what it means to acknowledge the history and legacy of colonialism in our history as a nation, as a community, and as a School of Education. Throughout our programs’ curricula we note the privileges we enjoy today because of colonialism and we strive to not perpetuate colonial futurity.
